    Timestamp: 17:27 before the breakdown on Jambi. Chancellor's bass ( i think ) is such a unique note, it's so skeletal and almost hardly there, totally wrung dry of any richness or body. But it fits so perfectly to dissipate the charisma of Jones talk box guitar solo that it demands a mention. The entire breakdown of Jambi is insanely good in all four departments. Outstanding.

    I remember buying the album in WH Smiths in Edgware 😅 For me, from this album they hit a peak that kept going until Power Windows. I love how you can hear the footsteps and creak of the door opening during the intro to Xanadu. Lerxst's solo at the end reduces me to a quivering wreck every damn time.

    The first arena rock concert I saw was the Big Generator Tour. Then, a few months later, I saw Robert Plant's Now & Zen Tour (with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble as the opening act), followed by Depeche Mode's Music for the Masses tour a month later. I guess I was off to a good start. 😁 Even though I discovered YES with 90125, this album will always hold a special place in my heart.

    Its interesting that you mention ''Vikings'' here. As you can see from the animation within the video, it depicts a character called ''Suur Tõll'' a mythological hero of 1 of our largest islands (Saaremaa) fighting an army of invading ''demons''. The entire folk story is no doubt being influenced by christianity but, at the end of the day it comes down to various invading armies from the past... perhaps even viking raids from the north-west. Then again, people from that particular region were known to go to raids of their own. Even though they werent culturally and/or religiously Norse, they did have pretty close relations with swedes atleast, who are just a little seatrip away! There are still old folk stories floating around that speak about going to raids and all that and if im not mistaken then plenty of viking artefacts have been dug up on the island itself!

    Proud Mary by CCR is much better than Tina's. Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence should never be covered by anyone, it's one of those songs. Manfred Mann had much better luck with Springsteen's Blinded By The Light, which is a favorite of mine.

    About your question, what came after Rush and was somehow the same direction: For me personally the heirs of Rush are Dream Theater, who develloped Rush''s Hard Prog into Progmetal (I know they were not the only ones ... Fates Warning, Queensryche) but DT reached a certain point of being almost perfect. That the music is not that exciting anymore after 25 years is only normal, but I hope for a new push by Mike Portnoy, since the last albums sounded like, they use many elements, you've heard before in other songs. But there are other bands, which follow the path of Rush and DT, the only problem is, that almost all of them are not really successful and so not known to the "average" music consumer. One of my next mixtapes will contain a collection of Prog/Progmetal songs of the last 10 years 🤘

    What is better than Closer to the heart ? Closer to the heart live in Rio with 50.000 Brazilians singing and dancing. Farewell to Kings is for me a Rush album, where they are on their way to (almost)perfectionism. Compared to later albums I feel like, it's a collection of songs, but it doesn't have a flow like Permanent waves and Moving Pictures.

    Hi Jim and Rudi I’m curious because I usually prefer the originals but sometimes I only know the cover version and don’t know it’s a cover. The Hu did a Metallica cover and that one was better as the original. Ike and Tina. I know this is a cover but this one is the better one. Great song. Joachim Kühn. Only know the original version. Well…sorry Rudi but I prefer the original one. I’m not a piano lover that much. Jacob K. Genesis cover. I’m a big Genesis fan. I still prefer the original one but this one is great too; very playful. Nevermore. I like Simon and Garfunkel a lot. This is so very different but it’s done well. I’m still grinning. Deodato. I’m a big Steely Dan fan too. They make such great albums. This sounds like the James Last version of that song and that’s not a compliment. It could have been so much more than this. Manfred Mann. Didn’t know this was a cover. I seldom listen to Springsteen. Mwah..I’m not really impressed; cover or not. Judas Priest. Don’t know this song at all. Sounds like a standard Priest song, no more no less. Portnoy etc. I have the original album in my collection. I prefer the original, simply because I really love Rafferty’s voice. Not that this is a bad cover though. Grace Potter. Never heard of him. I’m a big big Neil Young fan. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I think I have almost albums. I’m not fond of the singer. Musically this is an interesting cover and the guitar player is great.

    Hi Jim, Side two. 1st song. A wall of sound but very different from what Devin Townsend produces. I quite like it except the whisper growling. 2nd song (I think). Clean vocals 😊 but us it French? Not bad at all. 3rd song. It’s more about creating an atmosphere then a real song with lyrics but not bad except the bloody vocal noises. 4th song. Not that interesting this song. Not enough happening here. All in all I like this album quite a bit. I hate the whispering growling but they’re only very short. I found, well you did, another post rock band that you might like and I do remember you played them once. Elephant tree with the album Habits.

    You have a great radio voice btw. :) I'm back for part 2, sorry to be a few days late... Busy times here. :) I love echoes, and in the opening to the first track I love the slight amount echo they have on Geddy's voice and his tone is superb. Cinderella Man is a deep cut, I don't think it got much air play... The bass lines are sweet. A little bit of Geddy Funk going into the guitar solo. Those high parts I could sing along to back then. Now I'm not sure what I would break if I attempted... Madrigal is the one in a while love song. :) Also sweet. :) Yes Cygnus X1 is a biggie, if you've not heard it before it's quite a trip. :) :) :) One of my all-time-favorites. They play so tight even when live. Hemispheres is yet another journey and the end of an era too for Rush.

    More than happy to listen to this. I've got 52 minutes to kill so let's do a real-time review: I&TT - a classic! Ike might just be the godfather of rock & roll and Tina was a force of nature but I didn't need the adagio bit at the beginning. Stick to the studio version: Joachim Kuhn - never heard of him but I do like some jazz piano. This should have been jazzier - yes, state the melody at the start but then go truly wild. The best ever jazz piano album is German (of sorts) of course - Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert.: Jakob K - Some reggae versions work extremely well but I'm not sure about this one. Maybe a full-on dub approach would have been good: Nevermore - I think I praised them last time they were on here and yes, this too is straight metal. I do like how they ignore much of the melody and do their own thing for most of the track. The Disturbed version, weirdly, is more faithful to the original so we didn't need another faithful metal version: Deodato - Shame on Jim for not knowing his version of Also Sprach Zarathustra but this sucks the life out of the Steely Dan classic: MM's E - This is a band who knew how to do covers though I still preferred MM's Chapter 3. The Mighty Quinn (by MM's original eponymous band) is a Bob Dylan cover, Jim! More shame on you for not knowing that: JP - Kudos to them for choosing an unlikely folky song to metalise (probably not a word) but who better than Judas Priest? : MPG - I'm not that taken with the original - can you guess why? - but I can recognise class when I hear it. Not so fun fact - I (sort of, almost, kinda) attended Gerry Rafferty's funeral: GP - Love me some Neil Young guitar magic, of which this is bereft, but the trumpet guy almost makes up for it and Joe Satriani can play, of course. Didn't much care for GP herself though. I usually take this sort of opportunity to mention Tori Amos' version of (Slayer's) Raining Blood - that's how to cover a song.

    • @rudolfbecker4313
      @rudolfbecker4313 2 дні тому

      Hi Ken, thanks as always for your extensive comment. Almost half a book - Iove it 😆 And even if not all comments are positive, you at least explain your point of view, so everybody can understand. Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert is really outstanding, but Joachim Kühn's Beauty & Truth, of which I picked the song has some real good own compositions. Deodato's song is not really one of his best, I'm wondering if you know more than Zarathustra of him. The reason what I love about Grace Potter's song is, that they gave this great song a special note by the trumpet, which Neil didn't have ... and Joe's solo wasn't bad either, was it ? Now, if you had to vote for another coversongs mixtape, what would be your vote? Ps: thanks for the Tori Amos recommendation - will check it out right away. Have a nice weekend, Rudi 🤘

    • @kenl2091
      @kenl2091 День тому

      @@rudolfbecker4313 Don't know any other Deodato, I'm afraid and the trumpet was what sparkled on the Grace Potter track, though Satriani is always good. Cover songs fall into two camps - a faithful copy of the original, in which case, why bother? - or a complete reinvention. Most are inferior (unless you're covering a bad original) but some take you somewhere new and I'm always happy to hear them. If you're asking for some suggestions, that'll take some thought which I'll try and squeeze in between the Euros and other Saturday night TV. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

      @@rudolfbecker4313 OK, Rudi. Here's my (roughly) 45 minutes with commentary! 1. Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next (originally by Jacques Brel) (preferably the OGWT video version) Brel is one of the all-time great songwriters and this version deserves to be seen as well as heard. Indescribable. Proves that The Proclaimers weren't the first to sing with a strong Scottish accent. 2. Morte Macabre - Apoteosi del Mistero (the original is from the soundtrack of the film 'City of the Living Dead') Beautiful and haunting at the same time. May contain some mellotrons. 3. Vanilla Fudge - You Keep Me Hanging On (The Supremes) VF and Isaac Hayes were great at this - take a good song, genre doesn't matter, slow it down and emote for the full 7.26 album version. 4. Lone Star - She Said She Said (The Beatles) Virtually any cover of a Beatles song is worth hearing as the writing is so strong. This is one of the few that challenge the originals though. 5. Nouvelle Vague - Too Drunk to Fuck (Dead Kennedys) This is similar to my Tori Amos selection (which is the non-album single as you'll have sought it out by now!) in that it's a song from a totally different genre - US punk - changed entirely and barely recognisable as the original. Nouvelle Vague do bossa nova versions and this sounds 100% believable. 6. The Unthanks - Starless (King Crimson). I don't know if you know this band - essentially two sisters doing folk songs but much, much more than that. The original is my favourite piece of music ever and that this even comes close is a miracle. The added trumpet is more in an English brass band style than anything approaching jazz but this adds to the beauty. 7. Mind Body and Soul - White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane or maybe even The Great Society) This is a 90s acid drenched cover of the original acid drenched US hit single and is impossible to find on record but, luckily, we've got UA-cam! 8. Lamb of God - Jesus Built My Hotrod (Ministry) We needed some metal as most good covers tend to go the other way - 'cleaning up' the metal. This isn't miles away from the original but is demented enough to bookend the tape. I think all of these are available online for free, some aren't really in Jim's wheelhouse and virtually nobody will like them all but they keep me amused.

    That was a good listen, not over the top with harsh vocals.

    This was when Rush were the most influenced by progressive rock. Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, etc. were some of their musical heroes and they really went all out on the progressive side for the next three albums: _A Farewell to Kings_ (1977), _Hemispheres_ (1978), which were both recorded in the UK and _Permanent Waves_ (1980), recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec, the same studio they recorded _Moving Pictures_ in 1981.

    Wäre besser er würde nicht in die Musik rein quatschen. Wo bleibt da der Respekt vor den Musikern?

      This type of music used to be called Blackgaze though I don't know if that term's gone out of fashion these days. Definite elements of both genres and very listenable as a result.
